Rutland columnist Allan Grey reflects on the life-changing moments

I’m on my bike, cycling with my Summer Wine mates for a day trip over to Oundle and back when my mobile phone rings…..just before the bridge at Manton, writes Rutland columnist Allan Grey.

There’s no such thing as ‘hands free’ on a bike, and the A6003 is narrow with nose-to-tail 50mph plus traffic at this time of the morning, so not a place to stop and take the call.

The phone goes quiet but rings again before we’re up the hill and turning left into the village; if it had only rung once I would almost certainly have ignored it until I got home, five or six hours later, but some sixth sense suggests it might be urgent.
