A business group set up to promote market towns is delighted with the response it has achieved from local businesses in Uppingham for its Big Shop event taking place next week.

The town’s Women in the High Street initiative will host The Big Shop on Thursday, July 2, to show off the work of retailers and other businesses, both to Uppingham residents and tourists.

Sandra Pollock, who is leading the Women in the High Street initiative, hopes the day will become an annual event.

She said: “I’m so excited for this event, it’s amazing how many local businesses have jumped on board. We have so much going on across the lovely little town of Uppingham, from crochet lessons to violin making - there’s something for everyone.”

The Big Shop will be officially opened by the High Sheriff of Rutland Andrew Brown and the town mayor Coun David Ainslie at 10am in the Market Place.

There will a number of a drop-in events across the high street throughout the day, including demonstrations, exhibitions and even sausage tasting.

Some of the drop-in events will include quilting demonstrations in The Garden Room at The Falcon Hotel, clock making at Uppingham Clocks in Queen Street and meet the artist at Eyebrook Gallery in the High Street.

Also on show will be a hot towel wet shave and haircut demonstration at The Barbers of Uppingham in the Market Place, beer and sausage tasting at Everards Brewery and The Crown Hotel and jewellery making at Made Gallery in Orange Street.

A highlight of the day will be a grand draw of shopping receipts, refunding lucky shoppers up to £500 spent on the day.

Listen to Rutland Radio which will be doing its morning show from the town square and watch the Uppingham webcam which will also be on air throughout the day.

Uppingham Sports and Book Shop will be officially launching the new Uppingham bag on the day - with the chance to buy one and perhaps get your money back in the prize draw.

There will be plenty of tasty treats on sale throughout the day to feed those hungry shoppers, including traditional tea and cakes at Baines Tearooms, morning coffee and afternoon tea at The Falcon Hotel, The Big Shop all day menu at Beans Courtyard Garden in the Market Place and Big Shop lunch menu at The Crown Hotel in The High Street.
