The Bishop of Nottingham Monsignor Patrick McKinney visited English Martyrs Primary School in Oakham on Friday to declare a new classroom officially open.

The Bishop led mass with the children, who staff said were a credit to the school. They also brought flowers, sang well and behaved brilliantly.

Afterwards, the classroom was blessed and officially opened, but the Bishop, the invited guests and the children enjoyed a slice of cake to celebrate.

The classroom, funded by Rutland County Council at a total cost of £132,000, was built to meet the growing demand for school places as Oakham continues to grow. As a result, English Martyrs will be taking more pupils in September.

Building work started at the beginning of the school term and finished just before Easter.

Our photo, above, shows the Bishop with headteacher Alison Chambers with some of the children.
