A police inspector has warned people to check their home security after an increase in the number of burglaries in the area.

Sector inspector for Stamford, Bourne and the Deepings Mike Burnett said the rate of break-ins had gone up over the Christmas period. There were five burglaries between Bourne and the Deepings.

Insp Burnett warned people to be aware of how burglars operated. He said: “Burglars can tell when people are not at home.

“Look as if you are at home and have your light timers on.”

Most of the recent burglaries had similar methodologies.

Insp Burnett said: “Thieves have been coming in through the back. People need to check the security at the back of their properties.

“Maybe have someone come and check your home if you are away.”

Insp Burnett said many people were not following police advice.

“It’s fairly obvious when I go for a walk around which properties are unoccupied.”

The inspector urged people to report any suspicious activity near their homes. He said: “If people do see any suspicious vehicles hanging around I would be delighted to know, particularly if they can get all or part of the registration.”

Police have appealed for witnesses to several recent burglaries.

A home in Swallow Hill, Thurlby, was broken into on the night of January 11. Thieves smashed a door window and stole keys from inside before taking a black Volkswagen pick-up from the driveway. Incident 43 of January 12.
