BUSINESSES have been celebrating a booming year in the tourist trade.

Tourist information body Discover Rutland hosted a forum at the Rutland County Museum in Catmos Street, Oakham last week.

Representatives from more than 50 businesses from Rutland and the neighbouring areas attended to look back on the year.

Chairman of Discover Rutland, Ed Burrows, outlined the major achievements during 2011, including a 49 per cent increase in participants for the Rutland Walking Festival and a 15 per cent increase in visitors to the Rutland Food Festival

He said: “Rutland continues to stand out as the perfect destination break due to the hard work of all involved with Discover Rutland.

“It was pleasing to see that all we had achieved so far in 2011 was wholeheartedly supported by the industry.

“I would like to thank everybody in Rutland who is involved in tourism for making 2011 another successful year for visitors.”
