A number of green spaces on a housing estate in Stamford have been bought prior to auction.

Jelson Homes put 17 plots on the 350-home Scottish estate in Stamford up for sale at Leicester Racecourse today (Wednesday). But a last-minute addendum to the Kal Sangra Shonki Brothers auction said all lots had been sold.

More than 400 people signed a petition calling on the green spaces to be retained for the community and a protest group, Stamford Open Spaces, was formed to fight their sale. The campaign group today said Stamford town councillor John Dawson (Independent) had bought several of the plots and intended to gift them to the town through the Harry Skells Estate Trust.

The Mercury was unable to reach Coun Dawson for a comment. But campaign group spokesman Dan Hiblin said the plots the councillors had bought were on Montrose Close, Falkirk Close, Oban Close, Ayr Close, Christ Church Close and on the south side of Casterton Road.

Mr Hiblin added: “Coun Dawson has told the Stamford Open Spaces committee that his intentions were to ‘keep Stamford green, ensure the land was not sold to building developers and to keep the green spaces as play areas for residents’ children’.

“On behalf of residents, we would like to express our thanks to Coun Dawson for his community spirit and generosity. We would also like to publicly offer any assistance he might require from residents to ensure a smooth transfer into the estate trust.”

Two more lots were also sold prior to auction, although the buyers are as yet unknown. These were lot one, which comprises land cornering Perth Road and Aberdeen Close, Perth Road and Caithness Road, and Perth Road and Troon Close; and lot three, comprising land off Melrose Close, at the end of Ayr Close and Cromarty Road.

A planned protest outside today’s auction has now been cancelled.
