150 businesses in Rutland set to benefit from discounted business rates

About 150 businesses in Rutland are set to benefit from discounted business rates.

From 2020/21, the retail discount will increase from one-third to 50 per cent for businesses occupying a property with a rateable value of less than £51,000.

Music venues and cinemas also with a rateable value of less than £51,000 are also to receive the discount.

Pubs will receive a £1,000 discount if they have a rateable value of less than £100,000 and this is in addition to the retail discount.

Cabinet member for revenues and benefits at Rutland County Council Coun Gordon Brown (Con-Ketton), said: “This is good news for local businesses in Rutland.

“We have about 130 businesses that will benefit from the changes that have been announced to the government’s national retail discount, together with about 30 licensed venues that will benefit from the pubs discount.”

Coun Brown added RutlandCounty Council has no control over business rates which are set by the government and the council simply collects them.

Ratepayers don’t need to apply for the discount.

Instead, it will be automatically deducted from their tax bill for 2020/21.
