C-rafty teams race through Deeping for charity

By Andrew Miller

Hundreds of people have been making a splash for charity in the sun at the Deepings Raft Race.

This year’s event has seen large crowds gathering for the annual spectacular, which sees teams making their own raft to race down the river in the town.

Young and old have been putting together their makeshift boats to take on the course. The theme for the 2015 race has been cartoon characters, and teams have dressed as pirates, Minions and other popular people from animated tv shows and films.

The official charities for the race are the Exotic Pet Refuge and Dementia Support South Lincs.

A team from Peterborough City Hospital created a raft made in the style of the Flintstones Car, and the team dressed as Fred Flintstone for their run. They were raising money for the race charities, as well as Peterborough City Hospital’s Haematology/Oncology ward.

Andy Tunnicliffe, fire safety officer for Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We took part in the raft race last year and loved it, so we decided to come back for another try. We are grateful to our hospital colleagues and friends for their sponsorship and support. The money we raise will be spent on improving the hospital stay for our patients battling cancer.

“For many of the team of our lives have been touched by cancer in some way over the past few years, so we felt this was a great way of showing our support to the services offered by our colleagues in the Haematology/Oncology Unit. In addition, it tests our

teamwork to the limit!”
