Oakham Town Council is calling on readers to cast their vote today for their favourite tree.
The town council has invited all five of Oakham’s primaries - English Martyrs, Oakham CE, Brooke Hill, Brooke Priory and Catmose Priory to enter a tree into its competition, which will be running at the town’s late night shopping event on Monday, December 7.
Each school was asked to decorate their own tree on the theme of recycling and the tree with the most votes will be displayed in the Victoria Hall, Oakham, during the festive season.
And not only that, the school that designed the winning tree will receive a £100 book token and the other schools will receive a £25 book token for taking part.
People can visit Oakham Town Council’s stall during the late night shopping event to see the trees up close and cast a vote in the special ballot box.
Oakham Town Partnership is hosting the late-night shopping event, which will start at 4pm.
There will be a variety of stalls, street entertainers and a funfair.
And many of the shops will be keeping their doors open so you can start - or finish - your Christmas shopping!
The town will already be glowing as the town’s lights will be switched on this Sunday during a small event in the Market Place.
It starts at 6.30pm and there will be a band and a choir, carols and mince pies and mulled wine before Oakham mayor Alf Dewis does the honour and switches the lights on and get the festive season started.
