Castle Cottage Café is expected to reopen at Oakham Castle next month

A café owner is looking forward to restarting his business within the walls of Oakham Castle.

Steve Oakenfull plans to open Castle Cottage Café next month after planning permission was granted to convert the number one court.

The move is expected to increase footfall and help with the venue’s recovery from coronavirus restrictions.

Steve said: "It feels that Castle Cottage Café at the Castle was meant to be.

"Being just around the corner from the old premises means all of the café’s regulars won’t have far to go. Old and new customers alike will be able to enjoy the historic setting of the internal spaces and the uniqueness of the castle grounds and garden."

Steve's business closed last year when the lease expired on his former premises.

The café is expected to be ready for opening in April in line with the prime minister’s roadmap out of lockdown.

Opening hours will be restricted to 9am to 4.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday, with the addition of Sundays and a later closing time of 5.30pm during the summer holidays.

The café will also be required to close during wedding ceremonies.

A review will take place after 18 months to ensure the café is not negatively impacting other castle activities, particularly its eduction offering.
