The county council has created a new company to run transport services which were under threat.

Lincolnshire County Council has created TransportConnect Ltd which will operate at least 20 transport services covering special educational needs, adult care and CallConnect services.

The bus services include those to special needs schools including Willoughby School in Bourne, social care transport from Deeping St James to Stamford Day Centre, and CallConnect services 4R in Stamford and 15B in Bourne.

In January, Essential Fleet Services announced it was withdrawing from the passenger transport market having operated £3.5 million worth of contract with the council.

The council says some Essential Fleet Services staff will transfer to the new company.

Executive member for highways and transport Coun Richard Davies said: “We realise these services are vital to those who use them, so it is important to find affordable solutions which will help us to maintain them.

“The council have found it increasingly difficult to get contractors to cover contracts particularly those requiring wheelchair accessible vehicles and transport crews trained to convey passengers with additional needs.”

TransportConnect Limited will begin running services later this year, with Essential providing them in the interim.
