Former Oakham School pupil sets up 'The Science Social' website
An ex-Oakham School pupil has teamed with scientists and engineers to explain the facts behind some of the statements relating to coronavirus.
Charlotte Blake, along with co-founders Lucia Livoti and Rebee Penrice-Randal, set up ‘The Science Social’ website after being frustrated by many stories circulating on social media which weren’t backed up by evidence.
A team of people within the scientific community write posts on specific topics but the team are also welcoming guest contributions from people with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds.
Charlotte, an engineer, said: “The Science Social aims to engage people in science topics across the board and empower them to ask questions and read critically.
“It is a frightening time for us all and the last thing we need is to be made more anxious by unsubstantiated stories.
“If someone sends us a question, we will attempt to answer it with an evidence-based response.”
The team are currently focussing on dispelling myths about coronavirus, but will keep the project running in years to come.
Charlotte, 24, said: “For the long term we want it to be a big project and engage with as many people as possible who aren’t necessarily scientists but are science curious.”
