Council rejects Sainsbury’s store plan for Oakham

PLANS to build a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Oakham were rejected by Rutland County Council last night despite strong support from the public.

About 75 people piled into the council offices in Catmos Street, Oakham, for the meeting of the development control and licensing committee and applauded any support that was shown for the 30,000 sq st shop and petrol station on the junction of Lands’ End Way and Burley Park Way.

The committee voted four against, three in favour of the plans with one abstention.

The committee said its reasons for rejecting the plan were that the site is out of the town centre and the store would have been built on land that was allocated for offices.
