Rutland County Council to host free internet safety event at Rutland Showground in Oakham
Rutland County Council’s early help team and community safety team are holding a free internet safety event at Rutland Showground on Saturday, February 9.
Supported by experts from UK Safer Internet Centre and Leicestershire Police, the event is timed to coincide with this year’s annual Safer Internet Day, which aims to spark a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. It is aimed at parents, carers, children and young people, with practical information and advice about digital safety, keeping personal information safe and maintaining health internet habits.
Coun Alan Walters (Con), portfolio holder for community safety at Rutland County Council, said: “The internet is a fantastic tool for learning and staying connected. However, in an ever-changing digital world, it is extremely difficult to keep pace with the endless variety of devices, apps, social media platforms and, sadly, online threats. We know this is a source of anxiety for many parents who want to keep their families safe online. Our free Internet Safety event is a chance for people to come along and hear from experts about how to protect themselves, encourage healthy behaviour online and spot the hidden dangers that can lead to fraud and exploitation.”
The event runs from 11am until 3.30pm.
Expert speakers at the event will offer advice and guidance covering a range of digital safety topics:
- 11am to 12.30pm – Primary School Focus - for practical advice on talking to children aged five to 10 years
- 12.30pm to 2pm Secondary School Focus - for practical advice on talking to children aged 11-18 years.
- 2.30pm to 3.30pm Rutland / Leicestershire Police - online fraud, spam, information security and healthy internet habits.
Practical information will cover issues such as online gaming, image sharing, privacy settings and parental controls, including advice on how to use built-in tools like age and time restrictors for games consoles, how to apply Google search and image filters, filters on YouTube and other quick tips.
