Phone lines in Wittering back on after cable theft

Have your say

UPDATE 10AM: SOME phone lines and internet connections in Wittering are working again after stolen cable was replaced.

Service was down for many homes and businesses from Sunday after thieves took a length of cable serving the village.

BT engineers have spent the early part of the week working to restore the connections to the affected area and some services are now back on line.

Full service is expected to be restored tomorrow.

Gerry Crosbie, of Hillside Gardens, reported the problem to the Mercury. He said his phone and internet connections had not been working since Sunday evening.

The RAF base at Wittering also experienced problems. Spokesman Sqn Ldr (ret’d) Tony Walsh confirmed the base had not been receiving external calls.

A BT spokesman said: “We have around 75 end users who have reported loss of service associated with this incident.

“We would appeal to local residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour in or around street cabinets or manhole covers immediately.”
