THIEVES escaped a supermarket empty-handed after breaking in on Sunday night.

Police were called to Sainsbury’s in Ryhall Road, Stamford, at just after midnight after reports of a break-in at the store.

Three men had smashed a window to get into the supermarket and had tried to get into a self-service checkout machine.

Police chased two of the men along Ryhall Road but they escaped. A third man then emerged and was also chased along Ryhall Road. He also escaped.

One of the men was of large build and was wearing a grey tracksuit with the hood up. Another man was wearing dark clothing.

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said the store opened as normal on Monday.

He said: “We can confirm that there was an incident at our Stamford store on Sunday evening.

“No colleagues or customers were hurt during the incident and we are helping police with their inquiries.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101, quoting incident number five of April 23.
