THIEVES attempted to break into a cash machine at a supermarket last week.

The stand-alone cash machine in the car park at Midland Co-op in Burley Road, Oakham, was targeted between 12.20am and 12.30am on Friday. The thieves tried to break into the back of the machine using tools but were scared off by the alarms, makes a noise and releases a smoke cloud.

Police believe the thieves got onto the site, which is locked over night, by driving over field behind the store.

A blue Toyota Hilux was found doused in petrol and abandoned at the scene.

Last time thieves raided a cash machine at the premises in July 2008 the former Co-op store was destroyed by fire.
