Police are trying to find the owner of a dog that killed a puppy at Burghley Horse Trials.

A 20-year-old woman was walking with her 10-week-old miniature long-haired dachshund when it was attacked by another dog at about 4pm on Saturday.

The woman found help for the puppy but it died from its injuries.

The larger dog was described as a Staffordshire terrier cross with a mottled brown coat. Its owner had it on a black lead and harness. Police said the man walked off without saying anything. He is described as white, in his mid to late 40s, slim, with greyish, receding cropped hair. He was wearing a light blue top and jeans.

Officers are treating the incident as an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
