Dangerously overloaded van spotted on A47 near Uppingham in Rutland

Police have warned drivers to act responsibly when transporting goods after the Mercury was sent a photo of a dangerously overloaded van.

A shocked motorist sent us the picture with the caption 'Madness on the A47 near Uppingham'.

It was taken at around 2pm on Tuesday, January 28.

Unfortunately the van's registration number was not visible and the police did not receive any other reports.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: "Drivers using a motor vehicle on a road with a load which is insecure or likely to cause danger can be prosecuted under section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and schedule 2 to the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.

“We would ask drivers to take responsibility when transporting goods in their vehicles. Items should be stored safely and securely as to not pose a risk to either the driver in question or other road users.”
