Lorry drives the wrong way up the A1 near Stamford




A driver has described the moment he almost had a head-on collision with an HGV that had been driving the wrong way on the A1 near Stamford.

Adrian Long was driving on the southbound carriageway at Tinwell about 1.45am yesterday (October 17) when he came across the lorry that Cambridgeshire Police had just stopped.

It had been travelling northbound on the southbound carriageway with police pursuing it.

He said: "The lorry had stopped 30 or so seconds just before we got to it.

"It could have been a nasty head-on collision if he hadn't stopped."

Adrian said he waited 45 minutes while the police dealt with the situation.

They used a helicopter and a sniffer dog to assist their work.

Officers made nine arrests.
