Ten bottles of Champagne were stolen from two stores in Stamford, over four separate occasions.

Dale Alexander Withers, 35, admitted four counts of theft from a shop, in addition to two counts of making off without paying for fuel.

He was brought before magistrates sitting in Grantham on Monday. They heard how he simply drove off the forecourt of Market Deeping Filling Station after filling up with £40.01 worth of fuel on July 7 and £28.33 on August 4.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, went on to tell the court how Withers stole two bottles of Champagne worth £89.98 on June 23, then four bottles of Champagne worth £128 on July 8 and three bottles of Bollinger Champagne worth £150 on July 14, all from Waitrose in Stamford. He also admitted stealing a bottle of Abel Charlotte Champagne worth £96 from Stamford’s Marks & Spencer store on June 30.

Mr Pietryka told magistrates the thefts were captured on CCTV, leading to the identification and arrest of Withers on September 13. He added that the defendant has similar previous convictions on his record.

Stuart Wild, defending, asked magistrates to take into account his early guilty pleas when sentencing.

Magistrates adjourned the case for the preparation of a pre-sentence report by the Probation Service. He will reappear on October 22, at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court.

Withers, of The Crescent, Easton-on-the-Hill, was granted bail with a condition not to enter any retail premises except Morrisons or Well Pharmacy, both in Stamford.
