Edna still has a laugh at 106
She might be 106-years-old but Edna Fessey proved she still has a fantastic sense of humour.
As she was handed a card from the Queen at her birthday party on Friday last week - the third she has received - she quipped: “I’ve already got a few of these somewhere.”
And to laughter from her family and friends, who had gathered to celebrate the remarkable milestone, she joked to her son Bruce, 74, that she was “trying to slim” as she unwrapped a box of chocolates.
But she was keen to tuck into a piece of birthday cake at the party laid on for her by staff at the Priory Court Care Home in Stamford, where she has lived for the last five years.
On her 100th birthday, Edna was treated to a ride in a tank at RAF Wittering and for her 105th birthday, she was keen to take a ride in a hot air balloon but this year was a more sedate affair.
But Edna still enjoys trips out. Together with staff from the care home, she has visited The London Inn in Stamford, where she’s tucked into hearty plates of chips and chargrilled chicken.
Despite her appetite for cake, Edna’s daughter Tanya Collingwood, 72, believes it is her mother’s healthy lifestyle that has led to her living such a long life - that and “good genes”.
Tanya said her mother used to cycle 14 miles daily and has stayed alcohol free for 106 years apart from one occasion when she was tricked into drinking vodka.
She’s also got a fantastic support network. As well as Bruce and Tanya, Edna has six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and is much loved by all the staff at Priory Court.
As well as a card signed by Her Majesty, Edna also received well wishes from around the globe after a message was posted on the Facebook wall of her favourite singer, opera star Jonathan Stavvy Antoine.
She also received dozens of bouquets of gorgeous flowers, as well as her favourite lavender beauty products - to keep her looking youthful!
