Year 5 and 6 pupils successfully applied for roles as head gardeners in Edenham School.

The gardeners work through the seasons with Anthony Andrews CBE, the school’s Bishop’s Visitor and also a horticulturist, and Jim Handley, parent and head gardener on the Grimsthorpe Estate.

The role, for the past
few years has been
introduced to enable pupils to develop their
knowledge of the world around them and to encourage them to take greater responsibility for it.

This has included running activities including daily responsibility for plants growing on the school site, sowing seeds and nurturing new plants with younger pupils and running growing competitions.

The school is sure that this year’s new head gardeners will develop that role with real enthusiasm and hope that their work with Jim particularly, will enable them to learn more by working with him on the Grimsthorpe estate.

Other projects in school this year include entry into a National Potato Growing competition and growing and nurturing zonal geranium plants which will be returned to Peter Seabrook MBE to form part of his gardens at the 2016 Chelsea Flower Show.
