Employee at Hanson Cement in Ketton confirmed to have coronavirus

A major employer in the area is to 'remain open' despite fears about coronavirus.

Concerns had been raised about workers catching the virus at Hanson Cement in Ketton and questions asked whether the Stamford Road plant, which employs more than 200 people, should remain operational.

However, works manager at Hanson Cement, Sinan Urhan, played down those concerns.

He said: "One of our employees is confirmed to be being treated in hospital for covid-19.

"The employee has been absent from work at our Ketton cement works due to unrelated health issues since March 5 and we understand that the employee contracted the virus during this time.

"We can also confirm that there are two employees who have been in self-isolation since returning from holiday in northern Italy earlier this month.

"Neither has developed any symptoms of the virus.

"Over the last few weeks, we have developed extensive contingency plans and put a range of measures in place to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, customers and visitors, which remains our number one priority.

"Hanson UK is part of an essential industry and the UK Government has made it clear that our business can – and should – remain open.

"In line with current advice, our sites continue to operate while complying with health and safety guidance from Public Health England."
