AN EIGHT-week gas main replacement scheme is set to finish on Friday.

The National Grid has been digging up Stamford High Street since March 14 to replace old metal gas pipes with new, more durable plastic ones.

Traders initially voiced concerns that the £92,000 scheme would drive shoppers away, but disruption has been kept to a minimum and the High Street has generally been busy.

Lincolnshire County Council has used the opportunity to carry out resurfacing work on Broad Street and St George’s Street.

Further gas main replacement work is planned on Recreation Ground Road, which will be closed from May 3 to 18.

The county council will repair the pavement to the northern section of the road and resurface the entire carriageway upon completion National Grid’s work.
