A huge spider is not what you’d expect to be faced with if you’re inspecting fruit and vegetables but that’s what judges were faced with at the Cottesmore Annual Produce and Craft Show.

The eighth annual show took place at Cottesmore Village Hall on Sunday and a new category called Surprise Us certainly did just that with the Bateman family creating the unusual arachnid.

There were 35 entrants, who brought 193 entries into 78 categories, and although the number of entrants were up, some of the growers faced challenges with the weather this year so some categories didn’t receive any entries.

Tina Rea was the overall show winner, impressing with her unusual crop of yellow plums and chillis, and spectacular courgettes.

Show secretary Linda King said: “We were very pleased with the entries and the quality of the entries was excellent.

“I think we were down on some of the entries due to the weather this year. We had some entries which weren’t quite ripe.”

Linda described the spider, which was the winner of the new category, as “one of the most amazing things at the show” and she also said there were some superb entries into the flower arranging categories with arrangement depicting afternoon teas, musicals and romantic dinners.

It wasn’t just the growers themselves vexed by the weather - the produce show finished an hour earlier than planned because of torrential rain, but not before visitors had had a chance to get a good look at the entrants and enjoy the various stalls and activities on offer.
