A group of 10 entrepreneurs have received donations of up to £500 towards starting up their own businesses.

The grants were awarded by Spire Homes, a member of Longhurst Group and Daventry and District Housing and a member of Futures Housing Group, following a dragons’ den style presentation about their ideas.

Each of their business plans had been refined during a 12 week business start-up course run by Enterprise Cube, and were then pitched to dragons from Spire Homes and Daventry and District Housing who evaluated the candidates’ business plans and pitches, as well as providing tips and advice.

One of the stand out ideas was ‘Hugo’s handmade eats’ the brainchild of Spire Homes tenant, Laura Steele who wants to sell healthy, organic and vegan food in Stamford.

After cooking for her son who has allergies to eggs, dairy, soya, nuts and white fish, Laura noticed a gap in the local market. Realising she could develop a career whilst also helping people stay healthy, Laura’s come up with an idea for a café that will not only serve healthy food but also provide workshops so people can learn first-hand how to make healthy nutritious food themselves.

She received £500 to help her purchase kitchen equipment.

Lynn Aston, assistant director of Daventry and District Housing said: “It was great to see so many of our tenants using their initiative and talking so passionately about their business plans.”
