The story of a former Oakham couple who sailed around the world has been documented in a new book by a debut author.

Barbara White and her husband Rob embarked on a six-year voyage to New Zealand in 2015 aboard their sailing yacht Zoonie.

In her debut book, Barbara tells the first half of the voyage in A Tale of Two Yachts and how the couple prepared for and tackled an epic challenge.

She compares their odyssey to that of Norwegian couple Erling and Julie Tambs, who sailed from their hometown on a similar westward route 87 years earlier.

Ultimately the fate of both yachts is determined by the elements and the intervention and generosity of others when disaster strikes.

“Since I have always valued the comparative approach to topics worthy of study, I decided that comparing the two voyages for like and unalike would give my readers a more interesting and enjoyable experience as they follow our journeys,” she said.

Barbara’s lifelong love of sailing began at the age of nine on a self-built flat-pack dinghy.

She met Rob, from Oakham, while volunteering at sea and they went on to marry and settle in Rutland in 2009.

Barbara writes a sailing blog - blog.mailasail.com/zoonie - and has written travel pieces for sailing magazines, but this marks her debut in books.

A Tale of Two Yachts is available in paperback and as an e-book.
