A woman is preparing for the trip of a lifetime to help people affected by the earthquake that has devastated Nepal.

Shirin Fenn, 44, who lives in Essendine, will travel to the remote village of Sersung in the country, which was rocked last year by a quake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale.

Shirin has always dreamed of going on a life-changing charitable trip so when she heard from a friend, who visited the country last year, of the devastation, she knew this was her chance to make a difference.

She will set off on October 11, travelling with Different Travel and will spend seven days helping to build a house from the ground up. She has to meet all her costs and still needs to raise £1,500 for the trip.

Shirin, the practice manager at J F Hawkins Dental Surgery in Stamford, said: “I’m nervous about the trip but two weeks of my life which will get a house built for eight people has got to be worthwhile.

“I think the biggest challenge once I get there will be trying to remember that I can’t cure everything but I’m going to be making a difference in a small way.

“It’s such a desperate situation out there.”

In Sersung, nearly every home was destroyed and it is a 7km trek from the nearest road. Shirin will be camping during the trip and says the closest she’s come to this is ‘glamping’!

Shirin is planning a range of fundraising events to raise the money and anything over and above what she needs will be donated to efforts to build a new school.

Her first event is a clothes sale, which will be held at Stamford United Reformed Church in Broad Street on Saturday, April 2, between 10.30am and 3pm. There will be a range of good condition clothes on sale, as well as refreshments.

Anyone who cannot make the event but who wishes to find out more or make a donation towards the trip, can contact Shirin by e-mailing shirinfenn@gmail.com.
