A teenager on a family quest to try 52 sports in 52 weeks is set to take the plunge with her first ever scuba dive, in a bid to raise funds for charity as her grandad battles cancer.

Holly Newton, 18, from Greetham, has signed up to an ambitious attempt by British Sub-Aqua Club members to get 100 women to try diving, all on the same day at Lonsdale swimming pool in Derby.

The sporty student and her two sisters, brother and brother-in-law, have between them pledged to try out 52 sports in 52 weeks as they raise funds for Cancer Research in support of her grandfather, Martin Ridgway.

Holly, who is studying Sports Science at Anglia Ruskin College, Cambridge, has already tried out cross fit and judo and says she is looking forward to trying scuba diving for the first time as it’s a sport she would like to learn more about.

Now she is preparing to tackle a This Girl Can try dive organised by the British Sub Aqua Club at the Lonsdale Pool in Mickleover, Derby on Saturday, October 31st.

The Aqua Club is actively partnering Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign, which aims to encourage more women to be active.

Holly said: “We started the challenge in September and so far I’ve tried cross-fit, a type of really intense circuit training. I’ve also got bouldering or climbing and netball on my list as well as the scuba diving.

“We wanted to do something to support my granddad. He lives in Ontario, Canada. “He is currently undergoing treatment for cancer for the third time, alongside ongoing treatment for leukaemia and a successful tumour removal two years ago.”

Holly vowed to try any sport as long as it doesn’t involve horses!

So far sister Lucy has tried trampolining, Tai-Chi, Mauy Thai, and archery, while Carys has tried kick boxing. Holly’s brother Alec, from Oakham has played football and done Aikido and Lucy’s husband Mike has done judo.
