A traditional fatstock show is set to draw in an abundance of champion livestock.

The 114th Uppingham Christmas Fatstock Show will take place in the Market Place on Wednesday next week (November 24).

Cancelled previously only by war, the two national out-breaks of the foot and mouth epidemic, and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the show is the only event of its kind in the UK still held in temporary penning in a town market square.

The regular weekly fatstock market finished in 1954, with the ending of wartime controls, but the annual Fatstock Show has continued, and remains one of the most prestigious events in the town's calendar.

The show, like previous years will include classes for cattle, sheep and pigs.

Show chairman, Charlie Mason, said: “Livestock entries for all classes are high for what should once again prove to be an excellent show.”

Market Place will be cleared on the evening before the show and the temporary penning erected where cars would normally park.

Livestock to be exhibited will arrive from 7am followed by judging at about 10am and prize giving at 11.30 am.

After, a public auction of the pigs and sheep will take place.

The entire show will be cleared, pens removed and the Market Place cleaned by early afternoon.

The guest for the show will be Alastair Sneddon, auctioneer and senior partner at Bagshaws Livestock Market in Derbyshire, with more than three decades in the livestock industry.

Alastair will present the cups and trophies to the winning exhibitors and speak at the annual luncheon to be held immediately after the show in the Falcon Hotel.
