A SPORTING hero gave a gripping account of his career during a charity dinner.

Ex-England goalkeeper Gordon Banks was guest speaker for the event which raised £1,170 for St Michael’s and All Angels Church at Whitwell.

Forty-eight guests gathered at the Finches Arms in Hambleton for the dinner and talk on Tuesday evening where one lucky diner Caroline Butcher of Hambleton, walked away with a signed photograph of Banks’ famous Pelé save which was auctioned off.

The dinner was organised by Linda Page, of Main Street, Whitwell, whose husband Roger has known Gordon since they were teenagers. She was helped by Andrea Naylor who also lives in the village.

Mrs Page said: “Everyone had a lovely evening.”
