Former British Army General inspects troops to mark 100 years since Stamford Endowed School’s formed its Combined Cadet Force
Former British Army General, Sir Mike Jackson attended the Stamford Endowed Schools annual Combined Cadet Force inspection, which marked the 100th anniversary of the CCF’s formation.
Stamford School Cadet Corps, B Co. III Cadet Batt. Lincolnshire Regiment was formed at the beginning of the Spring Term in 1916 and had 54 members. A hundred years on and the CCF now features boys and girls and its popularity is as strong as ever.
The celebration on Friday last week started with a flypast by two Tornado jets from RAF Marham, followed by a Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, piloted by Squadron Leader and Old Stamfordian Andrew Millikin.
The inspecting officer was General Sir Mike Jackson, Old Stamfordian and former Chief of General Staff who inspected the sixth form.
Other high ranking military personnel involved were Major General John Drewienkiewicz, who inspected the junior Army cadets and Commodore Jim Scorer, who inspected the junior Royal Navy cadets, both of whom are also Old Stamfordians.
Among the organisations which attended the event, the Royal Marine Commandos, brought a climbing wall and performed some impressive unarmed combat demonstrations.
The Stamford branch of the Royal British Legion had two veteran members with them who had both received France’s greatest military award; La Légion d’Honneur.
Other military visitors included the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (Bomb Disposal) unit, marching drum corps and Kendrew Barracks who displayed many fascinating weapons. Additionally there was a Harrier cockpit from RAF Wittering and the military working dogs from St George’s Barracks, who gave an impressive demonstration in searching and finding, agility and apprehending a person.
The afternoon finished with the military dogs display and an inspiring address to all the cadets from General Sir Mike Jackson. That evening a Celebration Centenary Mess Dinner was held in Oswald Eliot Hall.
Stamford Endowed Schools Contingent Commander, Annabelle Holland said: “In 1916 a cadet corps was first founded at Stamford School and so it is this year, 2016, that we celebrate its Centenary. Altogether a really fantastic way to celebrate 100 years of the Combined Cadet Force at the Stamford Endowed Schools.”
