Former Deepings Independent councillor Bob Broughton defects to Tories
Ruling Conservatives have tightened their grip on South Kesteven District Council following the defection of former Deepings Independent Bob Broughton.
The move was announced at a meeting of SKDC’s full council last week, with an ‘urgent’ changing of committee memberships to account for his decision changing the political balance of the council.
Now, SKDC has 44 Conservatives, 4 Independents, 4 SK Independents, 3 Labour and 1 Unaligned.
Viking Independent Paul Wood told the meeting: “If he (Coun Broughton) doesn’t find it (being a Conservative) satisfactory, he can always come back.”
After the meeting, Coun Broughton said he only made the decision to switch parties just before the meeting and it was for “personal reasons.”
He planned to meet with the South Holland Conservative Association about how best to serve the party, but promised he would continue to serve Deepings residents as before.
Coun Broughton has been a Deepings town councillor for 30 years and a district councillor for 11.
The 72-year-old still works as a plumber and has a fleet of wedding cars, plus a B&B.
