Get fit in 2019 with Active Rutland

By Mercury reporter

Rutland residents wanting to get fitter and healthier in 2019 are being encouraged to use Active Rutland to find new sports, clubs and activities to help them reach their goals.

Active Rutland is a local sports networking group that aims to make it as easy as possible for people to get involved with sporting, recreational and health orientated activities in the county.

Supported by Rutland County Council and the Rutland Local Sport Alliance, the group can provide information on local sports clubs and events, as well as relevant contact details.

Active Rutland also has its own facility located in Oakham Enterprise Park, where a number of regular sports and fitness activities take place, including judo and gymnastics.

Active Rutland aims to help individuals, families, groups, clubs and businesses, and the services offered are available for people of all abilities and ages.

Physical activity and exercise can have both short and long term benefits for participants, including improved mood and better quality of life.

The NHS recommends that, to stay healthy, adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week.

Coun Lucy Stephenson, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at Rutland County Council, said: “Rutland is a very active county but many of us don't do enough physical activity to benefit our health.

"Being active is good for your physical and mental health and there are lots of easy ways you and your family can get moving.

"Active Rutland has lots of activities across the county. You can search for activities near you or find out about programmes particularly designed to improve health, such as Parkrun, dementia friendly walks and Steady Steps classes for older people."

To find out more about Active Rutland, visit the Active Rutland website or Active Rutland Hub at Oakham Enterprise Park, Ashwell Road, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 7TU.
