The incident on Sunday (April 7) involved a border collie and took place in Burghley Court.

Insp Ian Martin of Bourne Police said: "This was a nasty injury and the girl was very lucky not to have lost her eye.

"A crime of having a dog that is dangerously out of control was recorded and the owner has been interviewed, with further enquiries to be completed by a specialist wildlife officer.

"At this stage it is hard to predict the outcome for the dog, but the specialist officer will help to determine whether a condition is applied to keeping it, such as muzzling.

"We pass our best wishes to the girl for a speedy recovery."
