Nick Boles, MP for Grantham and Stamford, has expressed his disappointment at Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to resign.

The PM’s resignation this morning – in a speech made outside 10 Downing Street – follows a Leave vote in the EU referendum.

This afternoon, Mr Boles told this newspaper: “The people I work for have made a momentous decision. I advised against it. But they call the shots and I will now do everything I can to help make a success of it.

“I regret very much that David Cameron has decided to resign as Prime Minister. He was a great leader of our country and is a good man.”

As a gay man, married to Shay Meshulam, Mr Boles also thanked Mr Cameron for his part in the introduction of same-sex marriage.

He said: “I will always be deeply grateful to him for offering me and thousands like me the chance to get married like everyone else.”
