A group of cricketers will walk 79 miles to raise funds for charity after their president and his wife were hurt in a car accident.

Gretton Cricket Club members will walk from the village to Skegness on Friday.

The group decided to take on the challenge after club president Keith Wheatley and his wife Jess were seriously injured in a car crash near Oakham before Christmas.

The couple are now recovering at Corby Community Hospital but things could have been much worse were it not for the quick response of the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

Lee Wright is one of the players taking on the walk. He said: “Jess and Keith are the heartbeat of the village and especially the cricket club, and it is all their hard work and fundraising behind the scenes that keeps our proud historic team running.

“Keeping with the cricket theme, we will be walking in miles, the lowest amount of runs the midweek team scored last season which was 79.”
