A woman from Cottesmore celebrated her 64th birthday with a difference on Tuesday, braving the shears for a charity head shave to support her friend who is battling cancer.

Jan Harvey made a promise to her friend Amanda Bills, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, that she would shave her head to prove that beauty is not an outward thing and that even without her hair her special friend is still a beautiful woman.

Amanda, aged just 40 years old started to lose her hair on day 14 of her cancer treatment when she had her first dose of chemotherapy.

Jan said: “Amanda is the most amazing person. When I sit and watch what this amazing girl is going through, it makes you think just how awful cancer is. I had to do something to help raise awareness and support my friend, so that’s where the idea for the head shave came from.”

Amanda was there on the day to watch Jan’s head shave, along with Jan’s son and daughter, David and Sarah. They were in fits of giggles as hairdresser Alison Hornby nervously shaved off Jan’s locks. Amanda even got the chance to shave off some of the hair, starting from the top, leaving hair on either side of Jan’s head much to the families amusement.

Jan said: “They were all very unkind to me, I looked mad with all of this hair on either side of my head and none on top. We all laughed so much, it was a great experience for Amanda.

“I must say I did take a deep breath when I first saw those clippers coming towards my head and thought what on earth am I doing?”

Jan’s grandson Finley, aged two years old also watched as his brave granny had her head shaved and now keeps asking her why she has a spiky head.

So far, Jan has raised a total of £493 for Cancer Research UK, but hopes that more people will donate to such a worthy cause.

She said: “I never thought I would shave my head - but here I am. I said I would do it and I’m not one to go back on a promise. To me this is just a small sacrifice, my hair will grow back. I can’t begin to imagine what my friend is going through.”

Help Jane raise even more money for Cancer Research UK by making a donation.
