There was an air of nostalgia in Bourne on Sunday as a fleet of heritage buses ran for enthusiasts.

Town-based Delaine Buses Ltd was marking its 125th anniversary with the running day which attracted bus entusiants more than 200 miles.

Delaine Buses is one of just a few bus operators to maintain a heritage fleet and decision to preserve its heritage is appreciated by enthusiasts throughout the country.

The oldest bus in service was fleet number 45, a 1956 Leyland PD2 double decker bus, which was withdrawn from service in December 1978 and privately preserved before returning to Delaine.

It was joined by a 1960 Leyland Titan PD3/1 double decker with Yeates bodywork, a 1973 Leyland Atlantean double decker and the newest addition to the heritage fleet, a 1995 Volvo Olympian double decker.

The heritage fleet carried passengers on the Bourne-Peterborough route throughout the day, running alongside the normal Sunday service, which included Delaine’s lastest double decker, a Volvo B9TL.

l On Saturday, May 9, a bus from Delaine’s heritage fleet will be at the Fenland Vintage Vehicle Gathering at Whittlesey. Director Kevin Delaine-Smith said: “We’re very pleased the organisers of this event are commemorating our 125th and will definitely be taking a bus from our vintage collection.”
