THE Christmas lights have been switched on in Bourne and Market Deeping.

Hundreds of people packed into the Corn Exchange car park on Friday night to see the lights in Bourne switched on by the mayor Brenda Johnson and Santa, who arrived on his sleigh.

Young singers from schools in the town sang choirs and Bourne Academy and Bourne Grammar also performed on stage.

There was also a craft fair in the Corn Exchange and Santa was in his grotto hearing the wishes of youngsters.

Bourne town councillor Judy Smith said the event was very successful.

She said: “There was a huge crowd and it went very well.

“The lights look really lovely and it was a great start to the festive period.”

The lights in Market Deeping were switched on at the end of a Christmas market, which took place in the Market Place yesterday (Sunday).

Mayor of Market Deeping Bob Broughton switched on the lights, assisted by Deepings Carnival Queen Danielle Holland.

Coun Broughton said: “It was a magical Christmas event.

“The crowds were packed from one end of the square to the other when the lights were switched on and there was a huge cheer when they came on.”
