Independent candidate elected in Rutland County Council by-election after tie

Richard Alderman (Independent) has been elected as a ward member for Oakham South West on Rutland County Council following a by-election yesterday (July 12).

Following a tie, and in accordance with electoral legislation, Mr Alderman was elected by the Returning Officer drawing lots after both he and Joanna Burrows (Lib Dem) received 177 votes.

Mr Alderman will serve as a Rutland County Councillor until the next round of normal elections in 2019.

Result:

  • Richard John Alderman, Independent – 178 VOTES (ELECTED)
  • Chris Brookes, Labour Party – 80 VOTES
  • Joanna Mary Burrows, Liberal Democrat – 177 VOTES
  • Patsy Clifton, Conservative Party Candidate – 163 VOTES

Turnout for the Oakham South West by-election was 599 (33.56 per cent).
