Instant £75 fines for dropping litter in Bourne and the Deepings

The man in charge of keeping streets clean in Bourne and the Deepings is warning people there could be a £75 price to pay for dropping litter.

Coun Nick Craft, portfolio holder for environmental health at South Kesteven District Council, confirmed that cigarette butts, beer cans, food wrappers and other litter dropped across the district could result in an on-the-spot fine for anyone caught doing so.

We spend £1m a year clearing up litter and fly-tipping across South Kesteven and we are determined to keep this cost as low as possible.

The council is continuing with to inform people about the possible use of penalty notices and Coun Craft said: “If you drop an item on the street, we all have to pay for someone else to pick it up.

“We spend £1m a year clearing up litter and fly-tipping across South Kesteven and we are determined to keep this cost as low as possible.

“The vast majority of smokers always dispose of their cigarette ends correctly, stubbing them out and placing in our bins, while we talk to residents and visitors about the problems litter creates.

“Our teams monitor and patrol public areas across the district and, where necessary, we will take enforcement action against those who flout the rules by imposing a fine.”
