A security engineer took on one of the toughest physical challenges of his life as part of a TV gameshow starting this weekend.
Jake Maguire, 33, from Wittering, is one of the contestants in ITV’s new series Ninja Warrior UK.
The programme began in Japan before moving to the US, and it has now reached British shores. It challenges people to take on a gruelling obstacle course in the fastest time possible.
Jake, who works for Britannia Fire and Security in Peterborough, will first be featured on Saturday, April 18. He is looking forward to seeing his performance on the small screen.
He said: “I’m a big fan of shows like this, Total Wipeout and Takeshi’s Castle, so I was really excited to be involved.
“As time got nearer I started getting quite nervous. I’d never done anything like this before. Not in front of a live audience.”
Ninja Warrior competitors take on difficult a four-stage obstacle course which requires balance, agility, power, grip strength and muscular endurance.
Jake keeps himself fit and trains five or six times a week. But when he got the call to compete in Ninja Warrior UK, he knew he had to change his routine.
“I do a lot of resistance work but because this show is multi-skilled I had to change it slightly. I literally had two weeks’ notice.”
Jake was one of 250 competitors to take on the Ninja Warrior UK course. But very few made it all the way through the course.
“You don’t get to see the course until you run it,” he said. “They show you pictures of the different challenges but the first time you see them is when you’re stood there ready to run it.
“You don’t get a practice run. It’s quite nerve-wracking. The biggest challenge for me was calming my nerves. But once the buzzer had gone I switched off from the crowd.”
Jake was unable to tell us how far he got in the competition, but he said: “I’ve always wanted to do something like this but never had the chance. When it came I grabbed it and it’s just been unreal.
“I’m hoping to get the chance to take part again next year.”
Ninja Warrior UK begins on ITV 1 at 7pm tomorrow. The programme is presented by Ben Shephard, Rochelle Humes and Chris Kamara.
ITV’s commissioning editor for entertainment Asif Zubairy said: “We are thrilled to be bringing Ninja Warrior to the UK.
“This exciting new format will showcase some inspirational achievements as well as hilarious mishaps on what promises to be the toughest course on TV.”
