SWIMMIMG pool staff are hoping to recruit people to join the world’s biggest swimathon.

This year Swimathon Weekend takes place over the weekend of April 28 and 29 and Catmose Sports Centre in Oakham has pledged its support.

It is one of 645 pools across the UK taking part to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care with 5km, 2.5km and a team 5km challenge.

The event is also supporting Sport Relief with a new Big Splash Mile.

Duty manager at Catmose Sports Centre, Sarah Charlton, said: “The Swimathon Weekend 2012 is the perfect event to train for and participate in with your friends and family. You can set yourself a challenge to work towards as well as raising money for charity.

“Last year we had a fantastic turn out and many people of all ages and abilities took part, with a lot of effort and training to achieve their goals and raise money for charity.”

The event is open to swimmers of all ages and abilities with participants able to choose which challenge length to attempt.

Special sessions for swimathon participants will take place at the swimming pool in Oakham on April 28 and 29.

The money raised will support Marie Curie nurses who provide free nursing care to terminally ill cancer patients at home.

Every £20 a swimmer raises will pay for a Marie Curie Nurse for one hour in a patient’s home and £160 pays for a full shift for a Marie Curie Nurse in a patient’s home.

Proceeds from the Big Splash Mile will go to Comic Relief projects in the UK and abroad.
