Travel Counsellor Emma Savage: Just because travel isn't possible right now doesn't mean you can't plan your holidays
Travel Counsellor Emma Savage, based in Wittering, shares her travel news in her regular column.
January is normally a very busy month in the travel industry, as people book their holidays for the year ahead and get something in the diary to look forward to.
I’ve personally already booked my holidays and am counting down to Crete in the summer and Cyprus in the autumn. Over the last few weeks, I’ve taken some time to catch up with customers and find out how they are. Many are very keen to get away on holiday, just as soon as they can. Our conversations have taken us all round the world; from people wishing to take the kids away on a beach break, to others wanting to visit family in Australia to couples looking for 6* cruises and everything in between. So, although travel might not be possible at the moment, I thought I would share with you some of the key trends and destinations which I think will be popular this coming year.
Short haul, Spain and the Algarve always sell well but Greece is a true hot spot. The islands of Greece are unspoilt, the people welcoming and warm and the beaches are safe with generally shelving sand/pebbles. The smaller resorts are less crowded and if you choose a lesser known island, you might just find you are outnumbered by locals rather than tourists – my kind of place! I have visited Greece on many occasions and know the islands very well, so I use this to guide my customers to the perfect Greek island to suit their wish-list. One of the things I love about Greece is that you can visit several islands on one holiday; why not team Rhodes with pretty little Symi or Skopelos with Skiathos? The choices are endless, and I can arrange ferry crossings, transfers, car hire and everything else you need, to make your holiday seamless.
Further afield, Dubai and the Maldives are definitely very popular, with both families and couples wishing to get away to their own slice of tropical paradise. There are some truly excellent offers around for these destinations which are driving bookings for later in 2021; from free half board upgrades to 50 per cent off water villas in the Maldives. Team these offers with the airline sale fares and there are some great prices - if you know where to look.
Another trend I have noticed is that villa holidays are becoming very desirable. I think that Covid-19 has made people value their own space and privacy more, so having your own villa and pool without having to mix with others is proving to be a top requirement for many customers.
Villas within a close proximity to a resort centre (thus avoiding having to drive for meals out/drinks) always sell out fast, but I think this year you need to be very quick to secure that prime spot before someone else!
