A soldier helped raise funds for two great causes while strengthening the bond between his barracks and the neighbouring community.

WO2 Scott Burton, who serves with 7 Regiment RLC based at Kendrew Barracks held a fun day at Cottesmore village hall on Sunday.

The event had a dual aim; firstly, to raise money for the Seb Goold Trust and the Army Benevolent Fund, and secondly, to give village residents a chance to meet their forces neighbours.

Despite a lower-than-expected turnout, Scott said the event achieved its aims.

“It was fantastic. It was a really good event,” he said. “The people who did come along had a great time.”

The event ran from 10am until 11pm and included fairground rides, a bouncy castle, a trampoline, hook a duck and face painting. A variety of live bands played throughout the day and the main focus was on a talent contest with a prize of £200 and a trophy for the winner.

Scott decided to organise the event after hearing about the Seb Goold Trust while he was taking part in a golf day. Seb, from Wansford, had to have his right leg amputated above the knee after he fell from a moving coach travelling back from a rugby tournament in 2014, aged just nine.

“When I heard that the golf day was supporting the trust, I stated asking about it,” said Scott.

“When I found out what it was, I wanted to be able to help the lad. He’s a big inspiration and if there was anything I could do to help then I wanted to give something back.”

The final total has not yet been calculated but Scott is hopeful of a good amount.
