Ladies rugby day to raise funds

Bourne Rugby Club will play host to a special Ladies’ Day on Easter Saturday to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The day is being organised by the ladies’ RugbyFIT group that was started at the club by Mark Thomas in September 2014. One of the original group members is Heidi Rock from Bourne, who has recently been diagnosed with cancer for the second time.

Heidi was first diagnosed with breast cancer less than five years ago, aged 31. She underwent a range of treatments and was given the final all clear just last year. Fitness had become a major part of her life following the illness and she threw herself into the new fitness classes at the rugby club, along with a host of other activities.

Sadly, despite being as fit as a fiddle, she started to feel that something wasn’t right late last year and after tests it was confirmed in January that the cancer is now in her bones.

Heidi is described by others in the RugbyFIT group as an incredibly kind, warm and thoughtful person.

The ladies’ day is being organised by the team to show support to her and her family as they fight once more against this invasive disease.

The highlight of the day will be games of touch rugby between Team Heidi and The Rest of the World starting at midday. Team Heidi is an invitational side but any women or girls are welcome to join The Rest of the World and have a go at a fun, non-contact sport.

In addition to the games, a number of different activities and fundraising ideas are being planned including a cake sale, tombola, bouncy castle and face painting, which it is hoped will attract the whole family down to Milking Nook Drove between 11am and 3pm.

The team have already received an incredible amount of support for the day with many businesses in Bourne willingly displaying posters and contributing prizes for the tombola. Prizes include two Leicester Tiger tickets and vouchers for businesses including the Sugarmill, Smith’s, Hoppers Jewellery and a signed rugby ball, as well as dinner for two at Toft House Hotel and a round of golf.

Chartered accountants and business advisers, Duncan and Toplis, have provided £400 to sponsor the new tops that Team Heidi will be wearing on the day.

Anyone wishing to get involved in any aspect of the day should contact Mark Thomas on 07708 352202 or the team via the RugbyFIT Bourne page on Facebook.
