Otters Fine Foods in Oakham High Street receives 1-star rating from Food Standards Agency
'Major improvements' in the hygienic handling of food are needed at a Rutland café.
Otters Fine Foods in Oakham High Street has received a 1-star in its latest food hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency.
This is a significant drop from its previous 'good' rating in 2021.
Inspectors who visited the café last month said improvements are necessary for the management of food safety.
According to the Food Standards Agency, at the time of the inspection the correct systems or checks were not in place to ensure food is safe to eat and that staff know about food safety.
Improvements were also found to be necessary for the hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.
The cleanliness and condition of facilities were rated as 'generally satisfactory'.
Owner of Otters Fine Foods, Leo Sugden, said the inspector's findings were due to a 'technicality' and described the rating as 'really disappointing'
He believes it was due to the business having only one food vacuum sealer machine on the day of inspection, an issue which has now been resolved.
"It was nothing to do with how clean it was, or the paperwork," he added.
"Everything like that was completely up-to-date."
