PEOPLE are being urged to return their sponsorship money from the Race for Life event in Stamford.
More than 3,000 women took part in the 5km and 10km routes at Burghley Park on Sunday last week and now Cancer Research UK, which organises the popular event to raise funds, is reminding people to return their sponsorship as soon as possible.
Area event manager Julie Braithwaite said: “Race for Life in Stamford was a fantastic event and we are so very grateful to everyone who took part or supported our participants, as well as the wonderful volunteers who helped make the event happen.
“Now the big day is over, we are asking our supporters to take one last step – by returning the money they’ve raised so it can go into vital research to help more men, women and children survive cancer.
“Cancer Research UK doesn’t receive any Government funding for its ground-breaking work. So the money people in Stamford raise through Race for Life is crucial because it means we can go on supporting the pioneering work of doctors, nurses and scientists who are fighting cancer on all fronts.”
Julie said that the entry fee covers the cost of the event and responded to concerns about the £14.99 registration fee for adults and £10 fee for children.
She was unable to provide a breakdown of event costs for the race in Stamford but said the registration fee goes towards hiring venues, meeting health and safety guidelines, providing first aid, toilets, stewards for the car parks and PA systems, which all adds up.
Julie said: “All our events are reviewed on an annual basis and a cost per participant calculated in order to justify the staging of the event against the return in sponsorship.”
Julie is hoping the Stamford event will raise more than £200,000 and added: “One in four people in the UK will die from cancer. With the help of people in Stamford we want to change that. So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible.”
